Liberal Democrat Liz Lynne has been re-elected to the European Parliament
Liberal Democrat Liz Lynne was yesterday re-elected to the European Parliament for the West Midlands Region. The Liberal Democrats in the West Midlands increased their share of the vote across the West Midlands and also the country winning an additional two seats one in the North West, where the first Muslim Liberal Democrat MEP - Sajjad Karim was elected and one in the North East Regions, this is despite their being less seats since the elections were last fought.
Liz Lynne said "I am obviously pleased at the result and the fact that we increased our share of the vote when both Labour and the Conservatives have both lost votes and a seats."
Liberal Democrat, Charles Kennedy, commenting on the European election results, said "In yet another set of elections the Liberal Democrats' share of the vote is up while the other main parties are down to unprecedented levels. It is now clear, on the evidence of all these elections, the Local and the European election, that the story of the next General Election is one of three party politics. The Liberal Democrats have emerged stronger while the other two main parties have been deeply wounded. This has clearly been a very bad night for the Conservatives and underlines the fact that the Liberal Democrats are the challengers to Labour in their former heartlands."
The Full Result in the West Midlands is as follows:
1st Seat - 392,937 - Conservatives - Philip Bushill-Matthews
2nd Seat - 336,613 - Labour Party - Michael Cashman
3rd Seat - 251,366 - UKIP - Michael Nattrass
