Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, today challenged Tony Blair at Prime Minster's Questions on the need to tackle pollution by putting Europe at the heart of future policy making. He asked the Prime Minister, given that a growing proportion of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions comes from air travel, to "lead a real push at European level to apply the principle that the polluter must pay the aviation industry".
Following the news that parties in the Green/EFA group in the European Parliament lost ground in the recent elections, Liberal Democrats yesterday pledged to fill the green gap in the European Parliament, as the only pro-environment party in Britain to increase its share of seats. For the last five years, the European Parliament has been a real force for environmental action to stiffen the resolve of national governments. The environmental priorities for the next five years are as great as ever. But there is a real danger that the political make-up of the new parliament will seek to wreck environmental legislation, causing a backward step. The Liberal Democrats will take the lead and work to build cross-party alliances to champion environmental issues.
