Gordon Brown's visit to Birmingham has been marred by the publication of figures showing that the North-South divide is growing. Nicola Davies, Liberal Democrat candidate in the Hodge Hill by-election said. "Gordon Brown's policies have failed Birmingham. In 2000 36% of the wards in Birmingham were included in the most deprived wards in Britain. That figure has now risen to 52%. Unemployment in Washwood Heath ward stands at 14% - four times the national average.
"With failures like this it's no surprise more and more former Labour supporters are switching to the Liberal Democrats. Local People keep telling me they want an MP who will fight for local jobs, schools and hospitals which is what I will do. They do not want someone who goes to Westminster just to serve Tony Blair."
