Labour's economic policy leaving Birmingham Behind

July 2, 2004 2:51 PM
Vincent Cable MP for Twickenham

Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor

Speaking while campaigning with Nicola Davies, Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said "Hodge Hill is one of the areas that shows Gordon Brown has created a two speed Britain. More than half of Birmingham is now classed as in the most deprived areas in Britain. This is much worse than just four years ago."

Mr. Cable further said "There's not a single sign that Labour have changed anything here after seven years in government. The number of teacher vacancies is growing, the number of operations cancelled is growing and violent crime is on the increase. It's quite clear that from talking to local voters that they are deserting the Labour party in droves and lining up to back Nicola Davies and the Liberal Democrats. Whether it's council tax, crime, hospitals or local schools; Labour has failed this area. Nicola Davies would be a strong voice for Hodge Hill arguing for the investment the area needs."
