Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister
Liberal Democrats have today released figures showing that two of the wards in the Hodge Hill constituency came bottom of the chart of educational achievement in Birmingham last year. Hodge Hill ward is second lowest in the City with 28% of pupils achieving five A* to C grades at GCSE while Shard End which was bottom just 9% of pupils gained similar grades.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister Phil Willis MP on a visit to a school in the constituency said "Labour's slogan of 'no child left behind' has a hollow ring in Hodge Hill. No wonder Labour do not want to mention their record during this campaign - it is appalling. After years of Labour neglect what local pupils, parents and teachers need is a hardworking and dynamic local MP such as Nicola Davies fighting their corner. I am so appalled by the figures for Shard End in particular I will be raising the issue in the House of Common immediately."
Nicola Davies said "This is a disgrace. Frankly even an abject apology from the Labour Government would not be good enough. Labour are wiping out the hopes and aspirations of an entire generation. What is particularly worrying is that in Shard End recent years have seen a decline from one in seven pupils gaining five Grades of A* to C to a figure of just one in eleven. If elected I will work with the schools and the Council to help turn around these years of Labour neglect."
