Abandoned cars in Birmingham double since 2000

Dumped Car - Croydon

An abandoned car

New figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats reveal that the number of vehicles abandoned in Birmingham has grown by 95% since 2000. The shocking figures mean that in 2003 Birmingham had 10,638 cars dumped, the most of any local authority in the country. If these cars were placed end to end they would stretch from Birmingham to Rugby!

The situation has been made worse by the Governments refusal to make car manufacturers responsible for the disposal of end of life vehicles as is the case in Europe. Once again Labour have left the people of Birmingham to face the consequences of their refusal to tackle environmental issues.

Commenting on the figures Nicola Davies, Liberal Democrat candidate for the Hodge Hill by election, said "It is shocking that number of abandoned cars has nearly doubled in Birmingham in the last 3 years. Yet again the Governments failure to tackle environmental issues has blighted the lives of people in Birmingham."

Nicola further said "This is a direct consequence of the absurd decision to make the final owner of the car foot the bill for its disposal, rather than the manufacturer as is standard practice throughout the European Union. Every car burnt out in a derelict site, sitting in a quarry or cluttering up a housing estate has the words government incompetence written all over it."
