The Conservatives faced fresh embarrassment for their failure to select a candidate for the Hartlepool by-election yesterday when a senior local Tory attacked them for their tardiness. George Morris, leader of the Tory group on Hartlepool council, said he was 'embarrassed' and 'dismayed' by central office`s failure to even reveal when the selection would take place. He also voiced the belief of many local Tories that their party has no chance of winning the safe Labour seat, where the outgoing MP, Peter Mandelson, has a 15,000 majority.
