Election fraud investigation committee to meet tomorrow

August 26, 2004 1:46 PM

Birmingham City Council's Electoral Matters Committee will meet for the first time tomorrow. Since it was set up the Committee have been collecting evidence of fraud and incompetence from the June Local Elections and the Hodge Hill By-election.

As well as allegations of fraud and and incompetence being investigated by Birmingham City Council. There have been electoral petitions lodged with the High Court about the results in the Aston and Bordesley Green wards.

Electoral Matters Committee Chairman John Alden said "We have got to get to grips with how to run elections in Birmingham otherwise the public will lose confidence and faith in the result. We have evidence of what appears to be abuse of the postal vote system. Some people did not receive their ballot papers in the post, others turned up to vote to discover they had been registered for postal votes without their knowledge."
