Liberal Democrat Councillor John Hemming, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council and coordinator of Birmingham's "save our Post Office campaign" has slammed the Royal Mail's proposals to close 12 out of 85 sub-post offices in Northern Birmingham.
"Only yesterday," Councillor Hemming said, "I wrote and emailed the post office asking them to hold back on the closure programme until they had dealt with the legal issues raised by the flawed accounting in the PIU's report "Counter Revolutions". The Post Office are closing own a third of the network not because of the viability of the individual offices, but because they think it will reduce their own losses. The City Council is investigating taking out a judicial review on the basis of the irrationality of the decision given the flawed nature of the Counter Revolutions report."
The proposed closures in Hodge Hill constituency are the Shaw Hill,
Washwood Heath and Ward End Post Offices. Nicola Davies said "I campaigned in the by-election to prevent any more Post Offices in Birmingham closing, the election of a Labour MP has given Blair and Royal Mail the go-ahead to close three of our Post Offices. I am glad to see Councillor John Hemming and his colleagues on Birmingham's "save our Post Office campaign" are a seeking judicial review to prevent these closures."
