The Liberal Democrats have, at their conference, this afternoon called for a fair deal for older people. Conference highlighted that Council Tax is an unfair tax which disproportionally burdens pensions, particularly as the basic state pension has not kept up with the rising costs. Conference also noted that many local authorities are means-testing and charing people people to receive continuing care, with approximately 70,000 older people have to see their homes to pay for the long-term care every year.
The Liberal Democrats have called for:
The abolition of Council Tax and its replacement with a Local Income Tax based on ability to pay
An increase to the basic state pension. For single pensioners over 75 of an extra £25 a week and couples over 75 of an extra £33.70 a week, taking the basic state pension to £105.45 for single pensioners and £160.95 for couples
The abolition of charging for long-term personal care, whether in residential care or at home
