The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan yesterday told the BBC the US-led invasion of Iraq was an illegal act that contravened the UN charter. He said the decision to take action in Iraq should have been made by the Security Council, not unilaterally.
Sir Menzies Campbell MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary said "Kofi Annan calling of the war illegal is further proof if any was needed that the UK and USA should not have gone to war. Kofi Annan, the Chairman of the public accounts committee, and Colonel Tim Collins have all combined in their different ways to undermine the Government's credibility over Iraq. No matter how much the Government tries to move on, Iraq is a millstone around its neck."
