Nicola Davies looks back on a Liberal Democrat summer of success
This week saw the Liberal Democrats cap a summer of success with a very successful conference. With under a year until a likely General Election the Liberal Democrats are moving ahead both locally, regionally and nationally. Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Nicola Davies, July's by-election candidate said "The Conference and Charles Kennedy's speech in particular was excellent and summarised our policies and beliefs superbly."
Nicola further said "The Conference follows a summer of success starting with the Local Elections through the by-elections in July and we have seen membership increasing as a result - it is clear it is the Liberal Democrats that are on the up and next weeks by-election in Hartlepool could see the Liberal Democrats win another MP."
Some of the summer's highlights were:
Increasing the number of Liberal Democrat Councillors in Birmingham and forming an administration to help run Birmingham and deliver our promises.
Re-electing Liz Lynne as the Liberal Democrat MEP for the West Midlands on a increased share of the vote (up) and winning an additional two MEPs - one in the North East and one in the North West.
Winning the Leicester South Parliamentary by-election in July and just missing out on winning the Birmingham Hodge Hill Parliamentary by-election by 460 votes after a 27% swing to the Liberal Democrats from Labour.
Increasing membership locally.
