Liberal Democrats propose fast train link for Birmingham to London and Edinburgh

The Liberal Democrats have launched a new policy to create a 225mph rail link between London and Birmingham. The idea was launched earlier this week at the conference.

The rail link would be the fastest rail line in Europe. It would run from London to Edinburgh, stopping at Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle. Construction of the new line could begin in 2010 and full services could then be up and running by. Connections with Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow added later.
