More waste needs to be recycled
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting have released figures highlighting Labour failure to increase recycling rates nearly enough. Labour had set a target of 25% of household waste by 2005, 30% by 2010 and 33% by 2015. Figures released show that for the year 2002/3 only 12.59% of household waste is being recycled, just a 1.5% increase on 2001/2. The news is even worse in the West Midlands with the regional rate at 12.44%
The Liberal Democrats, at last week's conference, re-affirmed their 'Zero-Waste' policy. The policy sets targets and also practical solutions to waste through reducing packaging, reusing items (such as bags) and recycling a greater proportion and range of waste. The Liberal Democrats are also committed to introducing a 'Carrier bag tax such as they have in the Republic of Ireland which has helped cut down on waste dramatically.
Nicola Davies said "The Government, both locally and nationally, really need to show more commitment to recycling and reducing waste through additional financing and education. As well as helping to preserve our natural resources it will help reduce the litter problem that blights many of our cities."
