Yesterday's Parliamentary by-election in Hartlepool saw the Conservatives drop from second to fourth and Liberal Democrat Jody Dunn almost unseating Labour with a 19% swing.
The by-election was the fourth by-election in a row where the Conservatives were in second place in 2001 and have been overtaken by the Liberal Democrats, this by-election is the first where the Conservatives have been beaten into fourth. The Liberal Democrats have won two out of the last four by-elections, winning in Brent East and Leicester South, missing out by 460 votes in Hodge Hill and by just over 2,000 yesterday in Hartlepool
Nicola Davies, Candidate in the Hodge Hill by-election said "I know what it feels like to almost beat Labour, earlier this year Labour by just held on in Hodge Hill by 460 votes. I went up to Hartlepool and helped Jody's campaign and have sent her my best wishes this morning. The result was excellent almost winning a, formally, safe Labour seat from third place. However the bigger story is the Conservatives slumping to fourth place from second - this just goes to prove the Conservative party cannot win in urban Britain they have simply become irrelevant and it is the Liberal Democrats that are now the effective opposition to Labour."
