As Howard speaks so do the British public
Michael Howard is, this afternoon, speaking to the Conservative Party Conference in Bournemouth as he does however the British public have spoken and only 12% think Michael Howard will be elected as Prime Minister in next year's General Election. Even amongst Conservative supporters 68% think he will not make it, according to a Newsnight/ICM Poll
The poll also showed that nearly twice as many people believe the Liberal Democrats are a more effective opposition than the Conservatives. This follows last weeks Hartlepool by-election saw the Conservatives slump in to fourth and the Liberal Democrats record a swing of 19% from Labour.
The poll contain more bad news with more than half of the sample (52%) believed Mr Howard's criticism of the way the government made its case for war was motivated by a desire to score political points over Tony Blair and amongst the Tory voters questioned, 38% believe Michael Howard was motivated by political point scoring.
