June's Local and European Election counts have been described as a "farce and shambles", the City Council's scrutiny committee has been told. The Local Elections count on June 11 took more than 12 hours to complete and even then one ward was recounted on June 13. The European Election count results were one of the last in the country to be announced, after midnight, after counting started an hour late.
The Scrutiny Committee has also received complaints about the fraudulent use of postal votes at the city council elections, nine such complaints have been passed to the West Midlands Police to investigate. There are already two election petitions lodged with the High Court alleging postal vote fraud in Aston and Bordesley Green wards.
The conduct and security of the Hodge Hill by-election has also been questions particularly the indecision over whether to grant a recount when there were just 460 votes between Labour and Nicola Davies and the debacle of allowing people in the hall prior to the declaration.
