Labour's Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has awarded a £1.1 billion contract to German company MAN ERF over Washwood Heath based LDV. The contract was to build and provide thousands of vehicles for British troops, it was the biggest military truck procurement contract for 25 years.
Incredibly after rejecting LDV's bid which would have created 600 permanent jobs Geoff Hoon, Labour's Defence Secretary said awarding the contract to MAN ERF was the best way of creating jobs in Britain!
Washwood Heath Liberal Democrat Councillor Tariq Khan said "We have seen once again that Labour does not care about Birmingham, investing in Britain, or creating more jobs in the West Midlands, LDV workers in the Hodge Hill constituency must be wondering what was the point of electing another Labour MP in July's by-election if Labour are not prepared to stand up for them."
