Geoff Hoon, Labour's Defence Secretary has confirmed 850 British soldiers will be redeployed further into central Iraq in response to a US request. The Conservatives have backed the move but the Liberal Democrats have opposed it.
The Liberal Democrats had called for a Commons vote on the issue, this call was supported by 44 Labour backbenchers. Charles Kennedy at yesterday's Prime Minister's Questions said that any British troop deployments in Iraq, "should only come at the request of British commanders on the ground, and only for the purposes of fulfilling more effectively the role that they are already undertaking".
