Liberal Democrats oppose the Second Reading of the School Transport Bill
The Liberal Democrats today urged Parliament to oppose the Second Reading of the School Transport Bill. The Bill would allow Local Education Authorities to charge all but a minority of children for their bus travel. Research by the Liberal Democrats has shown that 600,000 school children could lose their right to free school transport if Government proposals were rolled out across the whole of England.
Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson, John Pugh MP said "All children should have the right to free quality education. This Bill puts tens of thousands of children across England at risk of losing that right. Once again the Government's mantra of choice in education has been exposed as an illusion. If the only way pupils can get to school is by private means, their choice becomes limited. We must save free school buses, so that thousands of children are not left behind."
