Half of all high street post offices could be closed or sold off under plans being considered by the Royal Mail. As many as 270 stores (Crown Post Offices run by Royal Mail) could be shut down or offered to local consortiums as part of reforms being discussed with unions and consumer groups.
Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary said "We need to know under what criteria Royal Mail would close these offices - those that have the lowest business value, those that provide the least in terms of community service, or those with the greatest commercial value when sold. This move suggests that Royal Mail don't have confidence in the high street business. This will further dishearten those Sub-Postmasters and Sub-Postmistresses across the country who are trying to keep their businesses afloat despite a downturn in income caused by recent Government policies."
