Council Tax up over 100% in ten years!

November 26, 2004 2:03 PM
Council Tax is an unfair tax. It penalises people on low incomes.

Council Tax up over 100% in ten years!

According to new figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats Council Tax in England has rocketed by over 100% in the last ten years. This staggering rise is twice as fast as the rise in earnings, showing that the Council Tax burden is hitting people harder every year.

Council Tax is now the highest it has ever been, costing taxpayers more than £20bn for the first time this year. Edward Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, today warned that next week's local government revenue settlement could prompt yet another inflation-busting rise in Council Tax.

Commenting Mr. Davey said: "Ministers are trying to hide the truth about the unfair Council Tax, but these new figures show how painful the tax now is, with pensioners and people on modest earnings bearing the brunt. With Council Tax rising twice as fast as earnings, and more than three times as fast as inflation, it has now become one of the highest bills for pensioners and families. Next week the Chancellor and the Deputy Prime Minister may try to sweeten the Council Tax bill in the run up to the General Election. But with Council Tax bills already too high, it's time to stop fiddling with an unfair tax, and scrap it altogether."
