Councillors Mike Olley (Tyburn) and John Clancy (Hodge Hill) attempted a coup against Labour group leader Sir Albert Bore over the Christmas break following months of discontent and lack of progress since the party lost control of the council last summer.
Sir Albert only survived after refusing to resign and the Regional Labour Party stepped in to rule any motion of no confidence out of order. by the West Midlands Labour Party before it could be discussed. Officials said party rules did not allow a no confidence resolution.
It is now expected that a leadership contest will take place at Labour's annual meeting in May, with Councillor Olley standing as group leader and Councillor Clancy is expected to stand for the deputy leadership. A contest would be the fifth challenge against Sr. Albert since he became leader in May 1999.
