Following the court ruling earlier today by Richard Mawrey QC, the Electoral Commissioner that six Councillors in Birmingham were elected due to massive postal vote fraud the Liberal Democrats have called for safeguards to be introduced.
Nicola Davies said, " It is clear further safeguards are needed. The measures the Liberal Democrats would like to see are:
· Separate count of postal votes to make it easier to spot fraud
· Lists to be kept at polling stations of people who turn up only to find they are recorded as already having voted by post, and for these people to be allowed to submit a tendered pink ballot paper in case the postal vote is not used, or the vote is found to have been stolen
· Postal vote application forms to be made publicly available for checking after the election, and the period for petitioning against an election result to be extended to 2 months to enable such checks to take place"
