Council Tax bills could rise by upto 50%

June 9, 2005 11:14 AM

Latest research by the Local Government Chronicle has shown Council Tax could rise by 50% to compensate for post-revaluation shifts in Government grant. Washwood Heath Councillor Tariq Kahn said "Council Tax is unfair, should be abolished and replaced with a Local Income Tax which will be fairer way to tax people locally. Even if Council Tax is not abolished revaluation should be halted."

Council Tax bills could rise by upto 50%

With a recent survey by Telewest showing that 75% of Council Tax-payers do not believe they are getting value for money, Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesperson Sarah Teather said "This survey shows no-one really understands what their Council Tax pays for, because local government funding is in such a mess. The Government has centralised so much decision making that it is killing off local democracy. We need to give communities more control over the raising and spending of their money, with a fair and transparent Local Income Tax."
