Tony Blair let off as Tory splits deepen

June 28, 2005 5:00 PM

Michael Howard's decision to quit after another record defeat has reopened huge splits and arguments in the Conservatives - and let Tony Blair off the hook. The Tories are now tearing each other apart as they look for their fourth leader since John Major in just eight years.

Liberal Democrat Leader Charles Kennedy, said: "Tony Blair is now being let off scot free. Instead of being an opposition, the Conservative Party has once again chosen internal warfare and navel gazing on a grand scale. "It is left to the Liberal Democrats to be the Real Opposition to a very unpopular Labour government."

Norman Tebbit writing in the Daily Mail has said "Charles Kennedy will be posing as the Leader of the Opposition ... unless the Tories can trust the people to make their own decisions ... they have nothing difference to say than Blairite Labour and they would have no reason to exist..."

The Daily Mail's editorial says "The Tories lose the plot (again) "the navel gazing Tories seem to have forgotten nothing and learned nothing ...an Opposition again tearing itself apart."
