Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for International Development

The Liberal Democrats have passed a motion on the Millennium Development Goals this afternoon. 2005 marks the five-year review of the Millennium Development Goals. Conference welcomed the review and the efforts made so far, however were aware that significant progress still needs to be made in a number of areas and raised doubts of success by 2015 without a major concerted effort and additional financing.

The Liberal Democrats Conference called on the Millennium Development Goals to remain at the heart of the International Agenda. Furthermore the undertakings given by the G8 countries be fulfilled and aid is increased to at least the UN Target of 0.7% of GNI (and that money be new money rather than diverted from existing aid budgets).
