The Liberal Democrats remain opposed to the Government's compulsory Identity Cards. In the Tuesday's debate on Identity Cards in the House of Commons saw the Liberal Democrats continue to oppose ID Cards.

ID Cards will not stop terrorism, cut crime or benefit fraud. These ID Cards will only add to the powers of a 'Big Brother' state and even by the Government's own admission increase the number of Asian people stopped by the police. Polls have shown the General Public is against compulsory Identity Cards that will cost up to £300 per person and from our campaigning in Walsall it would appear many of his constituents agree with us.

Selly Oak Councillor Dave Radcliffe said "I am fundamentally against the introduction of ID Cards and to quote Clarence Harry Willcock "I am a Liberal and I am against this sort of thing." Clarence Harry Willcock was the person by refusing to show his Identity Card led to the abolition of the wartime Identity Cards in 1950. Clarence Harry Willcock was of course a Liberal Party member."
