Thank You for Your Support - Local Elections 2007

May 16, 2007 11:01 PM

Winning Here DiamondBirmingham's Lib Dem councillors have pledged to continue working for a Cleaner, Greener & Safer Birmingham following the local elections on 3 May 2007.

Ten Liberal Democrat councillors were elected on Thursday 3 May. In the highlight of the night, Lib Dem Gwyn Neilly took a seat from Labour in the Hodge Hill Ward, a great result in the marginal Hodge Hill parliamentary constituency.

Lib Dem Group Leader Paul Tilsley, re-elected in Sheldon Ward with a 2,908 majority, thanked all those who supported the Liberal Democrats and said:

"Birmingham's Liberal Democrat councillors will continue to work as a team to ensure that the Council provides services that we can all be proud of.

"Over the last three years, we have kept our promise to make the city cleaner, greener & safer. Overall crime is down in the city by 20%, recycling has reached it highest ever level at 23% and a recent survey of residents views showed that you feel the Council is making real progress in keeping our streets and public spaces free of litter. But we want the Council to do even better."

As well as Gwyn Neilly, the Lib Dem Council Group is joined by Jackie Hawthorn, who succeeded Sandra O'Brien in the Hall Green Ward. Sadly, Dilawar Khan was not re-elected in the Sparkbrook Ward, but the Liberal Democrats still topped the vote in the new Hall Green parliamentary constituency, as well as the new Yardley constituency.
