Thank You for Your Support - Local Elections 2008

May 2, 2008 8:50 PM

Winning Here DiamondCouncillor Paul Tilsley, Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Birmingham City Council, has thanked all those who supported the Liberal Democrats and contributed to a "fantastic night" for the party in Birmingham.

Thirteen Liberal Democrat councillors were elected on Thursday 1 May. In the highlight of the night, Lib Dem Ann Holtom was elected with a 508 majority in the Tyburn Ward, becoming the first non-Labour councillor to be elected by Tyburn/Kingsbury since 1982.

Paul Tilsley cited a 1.9 per cent council tax increase for three years on the trot and a move from no stars to three stars as having contributed to the Liberal Democrats' success.

Yet again, the Liberal Democrats got the most votes in the new Yardley and Hall Green parliamentary constituencies.

The Lib Dem Council Group is joined by Roger Harmer, who succeeded Nicola Henry in the Acocks Green Ward, and Daphne Gaved, who succeeded John Hemming in the South Yardley Ward.
