Details have been announced of the 7.5km city-centre route for Sky Ride Birmingham on Sunday 3 July 2011. This is a free event offering people
of all ages and abilities the chance to cycle around Birmingham on traffic-free streets.
Sky Ride Birmingham will take in some of the city's most iconic landmarks and sights including Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Cannon Hill Park and the Rag and Wholesale Markets. The route will be traffic-free from 10am to 4pm allowing participants to take part in the ride at their own pace and enjoy some of the sights en route.
"I'm delighted that Sky Ride is returning to Birmingham this summer, " said Cllr Martin Mullaney, Birmingham's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture. "Once again it will be a unique way for people to enjoy the city and after last year's huge success I'm sure locals will come down in their thousands to enjoy the wide range of exciting events and activities on the day. Sky Ride will open up the streets for people living in and around Birmingham for one special day and we very much hope it also inspires people to remember just how much fun cycling can be."
The event is part of a national campaign to get one million people cycling regularly by 2013. The campaign includes free events, activities, information and support to help and inspire people of all ages and abilities to re-discover the fun they can have on two wheels.
Local residents are in with a chance of winning a bike by submitting their favourite hill to cycle down in the region. The nationwide search for the Perfect Hill will asks entrants to nominate their favourite hill to cycle down, taking in to consideration the view and surroundings, location, individuality and heritage and their emotional connection to the hill.
