4.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 20th Sep 2004

The Liberal Democrats discussed asylum and immigration at their conference today. After a fantastic debate, in which is was pointed out that the immigration was worth an additional £2.5billion to the economy (1999-2000 figures), it was agreed that immigration and asylum needed to be managed.

Conference agreed that the UK should move to a system of quotas based on different labour market sectors and the introduction of a 'green card' scheme based on points for possessing skills and qualifications like in Australia and the United States of America.
