Kennedy calls for an Iraq exit plan

In a speech today Charles Kennedy called upon the Prime Minister to set out a proper exit strategy from Iraq - including the phased withdrawal of British troops - as soon as the security situation allows after Sunday's elections. He went on to say that the Prime Minister should make a statement to Parliament next week on the Iraq elections. Mr Kennedy made the remarks during a speech in the City addressing the key global political issues arising from the re-election of President Bush for a second term.

Liberal Democrat Leader said "Iraq has now become a crucible of militant terrorism. For years to come Iraq will face that threat. There are some who are of the opinion that the mere presence of British and American troops in Iraq feeds the insurgency. There is some truth in that, especially after the initial mistakes that were made, the heavy-handedness of operations likes Fallujah, and the well-publicised instances of abuse at the hands of coalition forces. I would like to see the replacement of British troops with those from other countries, especially Islamic countries. I would like to see a proper exit strategy set out by London and Washington, with a timeline that augments and supports the democratic process. Such uncertainty is simply unacceptable - for the troops or their families."
