Fighting Post Office Closures10.13.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 12th Sep 2007
Birmingham City Council last night passed a Liberal Democrat motion opposing any further post office closures and urging the government to abandon their rationalisation plans. Lib Dem Group Leader Paul Tilsley (Sheldon Ward) said that 55 sub post offices had closed in Birmingham since 1999 and a further 10 were in danger. Councillor Tilsley added: "I despair at the government attitude on this issues. The axe is cutting deeper." He highlighted that many small shopping centres would be threatened without the "bedrock" of post offices to draw customers in. The government has announced plans to close down 2500 more post office branches across the country. In other words, nearly one in five of the remaining Post Offices are to be closed. The Liberal Democrats have launched a petition against the closure plans. You can sign it online at http://www.libdems.org.uk/commerce/issues/postoffice.html
