Acocks Green Morrisons / Sainsbury's Update

January 25, 2018 10:00 AM

Acocks Green MorrisonsMorrisons have been in touch with Liberal Democrat Councillor Roger Harmer with the following message:

"On 3rd January we announced that Morrisons would take over the Sainsbury's store in Acocks Green when the current lease ends in April. At this stage, although it is still early days, I want to offer you further insight into our plans for the store.

Once Sainsbury's vacates the unit we will begin a period of works to remodel the internal layout and improve the appearance of the store externally.

The changes in-store include the addition of our Market Street format with its specially designed butcher, baker and fishmonger counters.

We also plan to add a barista counter serving freshly ground coffee and a range of hot snacks to eat in or take away.

The façade of the building will be improved to create a fresh new look with cladding, glazing added and new signage installed. I have enclosed an artist's impression of the proposed new look for your information.

We also have plans to redesign the car park to improve the customer experience when visiting the store and we intend to demolish the Red Lion pub, which is on the site. The arrangement by which the pub is occupied has come to an end, therefore we are at an appropriate juncture to remodel this area of the car park. This would allow us to:

Widen the junction onto Warwick Road

Add a dedicated left turn lane which can accommodate more cars and allow vehicles turning right to flow through and

Install a pedestrian refuge island to help people crossing the junction.

We believe that this will significantly improve visibility for drivers, increase safety for pedestrians and improve the flow of vehicles through the car park.

Also accompanying this letter is a proposed site plan.
The plans are a significant investment from Morrisons in Acocks Green and a planning application has been submitted for the demolition of the pub with a separate application for the amendments to the store. We hope that these will be supported by the community and Birmingham City Council."

As with my previous post do let me know your views about this. If you wish to comment on the planning application the main one can be found here: https://eplanning.birmingham.gov.uk/…/Gene…/StdDetails.aspx…

The plans for the demolition of the Red Lion have not yet been submitted - this appears to have been a change of mind, given that the original plans submitted did not involve the demolition of the pub. I'd be particularly interested in your views on this aspect of their plans.
