Councillor Morriam Jan champions women in politics
UK parliament has never been close to getting parity in the house of commons when it comes to female members. There are currently more women MP's than there has ever been, and yet women make up just one third of the total number.
The Liberal Democrat MP group is bucking that trend, as two thirds of their MP's are women.
Last week, a cross party group chaired by Centenary Action offered a refreshing alternative forum to the typical theatrics of a council or parliamentary chamber. Women from each party, praised the work of women in opposing political group, and joined together to share their own experiences, and in doing so, encouraged women in taking those first steps into political life.
At the end of that meeting, Cllr Jan spoke to several women who were interested in finding out more about the Liberal Democrat group. She shared their contact details and has since followed up with them to find out more about their interests and aspirations.
"At that meeting, I met up with five women who were really keen to find out more. Politics can be a daunting place for women, not least because they tend to experience more abuse online than men. This, along with unclear routes into politics, balancing care commitments and the challenge of making it work financially, are barriers that put women off."
"If we are to represent people equitably, these barriers need to be addressed. Women can lead in that work, and it starts today.
"One thing I would say to all women - don't put it off. Join a political party now. You can always take your time to find your way. Just don't wait until you have time because it will never happen!"
