Tower Hill library is at the heart of our local community, it’s much loved by local people and very well used. We campaigned over many years to keep it open and get it improved. It’s been placed at the heart of our neighbourhood plan and it would be a travesty if it went and we should be doing our best to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Birmingham City Council is in financial crisis. Shocking mismanagement has led to vast Equal pay claims, and a failed installation of the Oracle IT system designed to manage income and expenditure has added millions to the already eye watering bill. Drastic cuts are to be made which will affect all citizens, and libraries look set to be among the casualties.
All we know is that there are plans to keep just 11 libraries open including the Central library. The other 25 are likely to close unless local groups and volunteers step in to save them.
We don’t yet know which libraries will stay open and which will close but it is clear that until we know, every library is at risk. The final decision will be subject to consultation. Until then, we will continue to fight for your local library.
