Save Small Heath and Hall Green Libraries!
Today, a group of Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors submitted petitions, letters and artworks from over 2,000 people, including hundreds of children, aimed at saving the libraries in Hall Green and Small Heath.
Cllr Shabina Bano said “We all know that poverty is rising in this city, and it is affecting children. Children need spaces like libraries, as well as parks and museums. Our generation benefited from these opportunities. We must protect libraries for the current and future generations.”
“There are children living in cramped and temporary homes. Libraries can offer a lifeline that many of us cannot imagine: a space to do homework, meet friends or escape the pressures of living in difficult conditions. These are essential buildings, not luxuries.
“There are thousands of children living in poverty across the city. Libraries can also be a space for signposting towards vital services and help.”
The backlash to the closure of libraries has been significant across the city. Best-selling author Lee Child credits his literary success to the Glass Palace; his sweet, childhood name for Tower Hill Library in Perry Barr.
Following the demonstration on the council house steps, three large boxes of letters, artworks and petitions were hand delivered to the city council’s legal team.
