A statement from Group Leader Cllr Roger Harmer on the 3-year anniversary of the big war in Ukraine:

“They say that a week is a long time in politics, and this week has proven how true that is.

“A week ago, there would have been no doubt about the fact that Russia started the war in Ukraine, and that the West supported Ukraine in its fight against Putin. There would have been wide consensus that Putin performed an illegal invasion of Ukraine and is a dictator in his own lands.

“The rhetoric from President Donald Trump and his team has been astonishing in the past week, and the speed at which the President has turned on Ukraine and Zelenskyy has taken the Western world by surprise.

“These latest developments have had a discomforting impact on Ukrainians left in the country, and the refugee diaspora. A strong people, they demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity.

“On this significant day, the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion, we renew our support to Ukrainians in our city and beyond, and we call upon our Prime Minister to do the right thing by the Ukrainian people.

“Our future as a country depends on a strong Europe. Now is the time to unite with our neighbours in solidarity.

“Slava Ukraini.”
